Unit not valid for use in this area. Contact local authorized reseller for support.

To combat so-called “gray market” devices, Lowrance introduced Geofencing technology in April 2010. This feature imposes virtual territorial restrictions on device usage. In this case, the restricted area is North America. If the device is activated outside of North America, Geofencing will be triggered, and the following warning will appear on the screen: “Unit not valid for use in this area.”

How does this protection work?

Geofencing uses geographic data to determine whether the device is located within North America. If the device is outside the designated zone, its functionality will be restricted.

Which Lowrance models are protected by Geofencing?

The Geofencing restriction applies only to North American models in the HDS series, including:

  • HDS-PRO
  • HDS-Live
  • HDS Carbon
  • and other devices in this series.

If you purchased a device outside the USA and Canada from an official dealer, it will not be affected by Geofencing.

Why do I see the message “Unit not valid for use in this area”?

This means that your device was originally imported from the USA or Canada, even if you purchased it outside North America from a local marketplace. In this case:

  • The menu and settings will be available only in English.
  • Only the American measurement system will be available.
  • Mapping functionality will be limited or unavailable.

How to unlock the device?

To unlock Geofencing, you need to enter an unlock code, which is generated based on the “Request Code” found in your device settings.
